(PHN) Neuropathic pain which occurs due to damage to a peripheral nerve caused by reactivation of varicella-zoster virus. Typically, it is confined to an area of skin innervated by a single sensory nerve (dermatome). Most individuals are infected with varicella-zoster virus as children which causes an episode of chickenpox. The immune system eventually eliminates the virus from most locations, but it remains dormant (latent) in dorsal root ganglia (adjacent to the spinal cord) or trigeminal ganglion (the base of the skull). The disease appears when the virus switches from their latent lysogenic cycles to their active lytic cycles. Although it can occur at any age, many of the cases occur in those aged 50 years or older.
