Johann Sebastian Bach Heut triumphieret Gottes Sohn Chorale Prelude BWV 630 (from Orgelbüchlein, BWV 599–644) Performed on Bückeburg, Janke Organ from Sonus Paradisi/ One of the most powerful and concise Easter pieces in Bach’s famous Little Organ Book (Orgelbüchlein). Composed around 1713–1716 in Weimar, BWV 630 sets the Easter hymn by Bartholomäus Gesius (melody first printed 1601) to vivid, battle-like musical imagery. The text celebrates Christ’s triumphant resurrection: “Today God’s Son triumphs, destroying Death’s power with might.” Bach illustrates this victory through restless, surging manual figures and a bold pedal line that seems to march forward relentlessly — a musical depiction of Christ conquering death and the grave. Chorale text (first stanza – English translation): Today God’s Son in triumph reigns, He breaks the power of death’s dark chains; Hell and the devil now must yield, Christ is the victor on the field. Alleluia! Ideal listening for Eastertide, Ascension, or any time you want to experience Bach’s genius for combining theological depth with concentrated musical drama.
