Glycerites are super cool and let me tell you why! • They can be used BOTH topically AND internally! • AANNNNNDD- you can use FRESH herb in them! • Why is this so exciting for an herbalist like myself? • For a few key reasons- • First, a glycerite (very similar to a tincture) can be taken for internal use where the glycerine draws out the medicinal properties of the plant, making for a great plant-based natural medicine! • But unlike a tincture, this is alcohol free. • So if you’re weary, for whatever reason, of alcohol- this is your alternative to a traditional tincture! • It also has a similar shelf life if stored properly in amber glass dropper bottles, for example, of 1-3 years (though I replace all my wildcrafted remedies at the freshening of every new spring season, at least). • What’s even better, while we’re talking about internal applications (in my opinion) is the taste! • It’s sweet! So your kids will have a much easier time taking a glycerite too! • Something they’ll come running to- and not away- from! Bonus points! • And glycerine is water based as well- meaning that you can sink fresh herbs and flowers right into it, without the worry of it going rancid. • This is an extra important note- because you can completely skip the step of drying the herb first, like you’d have to with an infused oil. • And I’m comparing the glycerite to an infused oil as well- because I’m tying us over, and onto, external applications now. • A glycerite can be used just like you would an infused oil- but again- no drying time is needed, therefore saving time for you! ☺️ • And now you can use your glycerite for your skin too! • Now, I have seen people use alcohol tinctures topically, and you technically can- but I have one point to mention…alcohol. • Alcohol is drying and harsh- and I’m all about crafting moisturizing, soothing, & healing skincare around here, so I’m not for this recommendation. • I’d say if you want to craft just ONE remedy to have on hand for MANY different applications- then a glycerite is where it’s at!
