These ratings' advice sequences appeared on home videos in Australia. The first in the mid 1990s. The second from the early 2000s. The X18+ rating given to sexually explicit pornography is not shown here. A history of Australian classifications is as follows: Pre-1971 G - For General Exhibition A - Not Suitable for Children SOA - Suitable Only for Adults Post-1971 G - For General Exhibition NRC - Not Recommended for Children, later became PG - Parental Guidance Recommended (NRC used in Victorian cinemas until late 1980s) M - For Mature Audience R - Restricted Exhibition - persons between 2 and 18 years not admitted (changed to over 18 only in the early 1980s) RR - Refused Registration (ie. Banned) Post-1984 As above but now includes: X - Restricted Exhibition - to be displayed in specially designated areas that are restricted to adults, and are not for public exhibition. The X rating was mostly applied to pornography, but was initially considered for any film deemed too extreme for an R rating. Non-porn films given this rating in their uncut form included Maniac, Rosemary's Killer, The Beast, Jungle Warriors, Pink Flamingos, Red Nights of the Gestapo, Bare Breasted Countess, Killer Nun. Post-1989 G - For General Exhibition PG - Parental Guidance Recommended for Persons Under 15 years M15+ - Recommended for Mature Audiences 15 Years and Over R18+ - Restricted to Adults 18 Years and Over X18+ - Restricted to Adults 18 Years and Over (contains sexually explicit material) RR - Refused Registration Post-1993 As above but now includes: E - Exempt from Classification MA15+ - Restrictions Apply to Persons Under 15 Years (later changed to Persons Under 15 Years Must Be Accompanied by a Parent or Adult Guardian) RC - Refused Classification (ie. Banned) Post-2005 As above, except the addition of CTC, and advice has changed: CTC - Check the Classification - displayed before film trailers for films yet to be classified PG - Parental Guidance Recommended M15+ is now just... M - Recommended for Mature Audiences MA15+ has the advice changed to - Not Suitable for People Under 15.
