In June 1944, Lieutenant Edward Feightner volunteered for a photo reconnaissance mission over Japanese-held islands in the Marianas. Enemy shells tore off half his left wing and destroyed his tail surfaces. With 170 holes in his Hellcat, he flew 130 miles back to USS Bunker Hill and landed on the carrier deck. The photographs he brought back saved hundreds of Marine lives during the invasion. This is the verified story of the pilot who refused to abort, the Grumman Hellcat that refused to die, and the mission that proved impossible could be survived. π If this story moved you, hit that LIKE button!
