Christopher Baxter - Piano These Three Pieces for the Young are typically inventive of Lutosławski, and bring lots of imagination and innovation to piano music intended for children. I have to say, there must have been high expectations for the children in question - these pieces are not without their challenges!!! The three are - I - Czteropalcówka / Four-finger exercise II - Melodia / Melody III - Marsz / March I became interested in the music of Lutosławski as a student, when I learned such pieces as the Paganini Variations for Two Pianos and the Dance Preludes for Clarinet and Piano, but it was some years later that I encountered the marvellous recording of his solo piano music by Ewa Kupiec. The whole collection lasts about an hour, so it is almost manageable for someone of my means to explore it all - I like to study (if not play) complete collections whenever I can! When getting to grips with the musical language of a composer, I like to work my way through the shorter pieces and build upwards, so I started with the Melodie Ludowe, Bukoliki, Utwory dla młodzieży, and now I can look onwards to the Etudes and the wonderful Sonata... watch this space...
