King Oswald of Northumbria is an important figure in early Anglo-Saxon history. Finding the kingdom at the brink of destruction, he fought against the odds, securing Northumbrian independence, and even dominance in the region during his reign. His strong embracement of Christianity ensured the spread of the religion to the northern Angles, and his virtuous reputation and martyr-like demise saw his recognition as a Saint following his death.
