Today, we’re revisiting one of the most tragic and shocking moments in Formula One history—the fatal crash of Welsh F1 driver Tom Pryce during the 1977 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. Tom Pryce was widely regarded as a future world champion. Known for his exceptional talent, especially in wet conditions, he raced in Formula One from 1974 until his untimely death in 1977. The accident took place on lap 22 of the race. Pryce’s teammate, Renzo Zorzi, had pulled off the track due to a fuel leak that caused a small fire. Two young marshals ran across the high-speed straight to help, including 19-year-old Frederik Jansen van Vuuren, each carrying heavy fire extinguishers. Due to a rise in the track, the marshals were nearly invisible to the drivers approaching at high speeds. Hans-Joachim Stuck, just ahead of Pryce, managed to swerve and avoid them—but Pryce, following directly behind, had no time to react. Tragically, Pryce's car struck van Vuuren at around 270 km/h. The young marshal was killed instantly. The fire extinguisher he was carrying hit Pryce in the head with such force that it also killed him on impact. Pryce’s car, still moving at full speed with him lifeless behind the wheel, veered across the track, collided with another car, and finally crashed into the barriers. The incident resulted in the immediate deaths of both Tom Pryce and Frederik Jansen van Vuuren, and it remains one of the darkest moments in motorsport history. In the aftermath, the tragedy forced Formula One to re-evaluate its safety measures, especially for track marshals. Rest in peace to both lives lost that day.
