In this inclusive upper elementary classroom, a student uses the text-to-speech option on his voice output communication device to share a story he wrote with his peers. The students listen and then offer compliments and suggestions to improve the story. The video demonstrates effective strategies for engaging students with disabilities in literacy instruction. This video is part of the English Language Arts Strategies for Students with Cognitive Disabilities video collection ( • English Language Arts Strategies for Stude... ) featuring strategies for comprehensive literacy instruction for students with significant cognitive disabilities. This collection was developed through a collaborative partnership with the Iowa Department of Education; the University of Northern Iowa; The Center for Literacy Disabilities Studies, UNC Chapel Hill; and general and special education teachers across Iowa The purpose of the collection is to support educators and families in understanding how all students can learn and make progress in Iowa’s English Language Arts Academic Standards.
