(18 Sep 1995) Russian/Nat Almost a year after the war in Chechnya began, the maiming and killing continues. With the rebel forces pushed into the mountains by the Russian army, guerilla warfare is now taking its toll on Russian soldiers. Despite the lull in open warfare, wounded soldiers continue to arrive at Grozny's military airport. Over the weekend of September 16-17 alone, three Russian soldiers were killed and fifteen injured by Chechen rebels in Grozny and the Bamut area. The majority of injuries are caused by land mines laid on the roads leading to the soldiers' road blocks. The injured are brought to the field hospital at the military airport before being shipped out to hospitals in southern Russia. Those unlucky enough to be wounded are brought to this operating theatre. Private Igor Bakirov is one of them. While out on patrol he suffered severed wounds to his leg after stepping on a mine. Captain Aleksander Chernilov and his medical team have been at the airport since fighting began last December. Although the worst months were December and January, Chernilov says the dead and wounded continue to stream in: SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "In the course of a day we usually get two or three wounded, sometimes 8 to 10. They have either been shot or stepped on mines." SUPER CAPTION: Captain Aleksander Chernilov Captain Chernilov admits to being tired and looking forward to returning home to Russia. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "The army can put up with here for a while yet but our great wish is for our unit and hospital to be brought back to base. People are already tired we've already been here more than 8 months" SUPER CAPTION: Captain Aleksander Chernilov With little progress being made toward a lasting peace in Chechnya, it may be some time before this medical team gets to go home.
