THE HISTORY OF THE DEMOCRACY SAUSAGE There are only a few days left before Aussies head to the polls for the federal election! While a lot of people are busy thinking about who to vote for we thought we'd focus on another very important part of Australia's elections... the democracy sausage! It’s become an Aussie Icon, an election day essential, minced meat beautifully sandwiched by a slice of white bread. Yum But where did it all start? Well sausages have been around for thousands of years and have appeared in just about every culture, from Ancient Greece, to China and Italy. In the 1800s the Germans brought their famous sausages like Frankfurts and Bockwürste. Meanwhile the Brits introduced us to the thick Cumberland sausage and the thin English breakfast sausage. Despite all that it was a long time before the sausage was seen as a typical cuisine and the sizzle made its way into school sports days, fundraisers, and of course elections. Over the years the democracy sausage became a proper Aussie tradition with plenty of leaders getting involved to munch down on them. It's even caused controversy. In 1989 the Western Australian Premier Peter Dowding was accused of bribing voters with free sausages. There was even an investigation which eventually found that providing free snags was NOT considered political bribery. Turns out it takes a lot more than a sausage to snag votes. --- JANE GOODALL MAKES AN EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT South Australia's Monarto Zoo has just made a pretty exciting announcement and they called in a V.I.P. to break the news! They got to explore the tower and learn more about its history. Back in the 1880's a competition was organised to build an iron tower to mark 100 years since the French Revolution. There were 107 entries but it was Gustave Eiffel's team that was chosen. At the time, a lot of people actually really hated it and said it didn't fit with the other buildings in Paris. But now 130 years on the tower is still standing, visited by about 7 million visitors a year and known around the world as a significant and much loved monument for Parisians and tourists alike. --- WINDOW WASHERS DANGLE FROM 50 STOREY BUILDING As far as dangerous jobs go, turns out window washer is right up there!
