Palea Epidavros Archaia Epidavros, or Palea Epidavros as it was called before, is a small fishing village at the east coast of the Peloponnese. Built upon the ruins of the ancient city-state from which it its name derives, the small town is nestled between two peninsulas, densely planted with olive and orange groves. Ideally situated as holiday resort can be a comfortable base giving visitors easy access to several important archaeological sites and places of interest in the county and the surrounding area. The area is rich in history. As far back as 1184 B.C., Epidavros was the most important harbour in the Peloponnese, thanks to its strategic position and renowned throughout Greece for the Sanctuary of Askepios with its healing center and the famous Ancient Theater. The theater has a marvelous acoustic and is the only one worldwide to operate from more than 2000 years continuously. Both lie at a distance of approximately 10 km from Palea Epidavros and are top-rated tourist attractions. In one of the peninsulas, known as the "To Nisi (the Island)" there are remains of the Acropolis which was part of the ancient city. On top of the same hill are the ruins of a classical temple dedicated to Artemis. At the foot of the Akropolis, is located the so-called "Small Theatre" of the 4th century BC. Each summer various musical and theatrical events take place in the theatre as part of the Epidaurus Festival. Several Mycenaean rock-cut tombs can be seen in one of the streets that runs along the hill to the west of the town center. Finds from the Mycenaean tombs and other archaeological sites are stored or on display in the Archaeological Museum of Nafplio. Palea Epidavros is situated 34 km to the east of Nafplio and counts a number of hotels and restaurants of any kind and budget. The village bustles with tourists in the summer and its little harbor fills with yachts and sailing boats, mainly because of the famous Festival and the interesting archaeological sites, nearby. An open-air “Agritourism Festival” is also organized on the waterfront every July, promoting local products. It attracts exhibiters from all over the county and includes product tasting and selling of many top-quality products. A short distance from the village, are gorgeous beaches and plenty of trails, leading to the nearby archaeological sites and to lovely beaches, for those who like hiking.
