To invite this group for a live concert, please visit https://indianraga.com/live or email info@indianraga.com Tatkaar Tarangam, a Kathak Kuchipudi face-off to accompanying Pakhawaj and Mridangam. Recreating the time when royal courts and darbars regularly featured face-offs between dancers and percussionists, this Indian classical dance-off demonstrates the dancers’ skill, speed and stamina, highlighting the Kathak Tatkaar or footwork and the Kuchipudi Tarangam, the plate dance. Performing this battle of artistic skill and wits are Sunil Sunkara (Kathak), Vaishnavi Lanka (Kuchipudi), Sarvesh Karthick (Mridangam, Bols), Anirudh Sharma (Pakhawaj, Bols). A dancer and his Pakhawaj guru from Kashi enter the court of a maharaja in South India where the Rajnarthaki or court dancer and her guru are in a recital. Thus, starts a face-off. It begins with the two dancers matching steps, then the court dancer starts the Kuchipudi Tarangam to which the visiting Kathak dancer responds with the Tatkaar. In a bid to match skills the Kathak dancer executes the Tatkaar on a brass plate! The dancers relish the competition and end the dance together.
