An excellent quality Sublime Harmony antique music box with drum and bells made by Paillard Vaucher et Fils in St Croix, Switzerland c. 1875. The fully serviced musical movement features a drum with nine beaters and nine saucer bells arranged in staggered formation. Both the drum and the bells can be engaged and disengaged at will using the levers to the front of the combs. The music box also has a wonderful Sublime Harmony arrangement, whereby two combs are arranged in parallel to produce a particularly rich and complex sound. This example is of particularly fine quality – notice how fine and close together the teeth are on the combs, indicative of excellent sound. The music box plays six tunes as indicated on the original tunesheet, and has superior quality tone and arrangements. This is housed within a flame walnut-veneered case surrounded with stringing and ebonised borders, along with gilt carrying handles. There are some small imperfections to the veneer on the lid and sides, commensurate with the age of the music box, but it is nonetheless a very impressive piece. It is a particularly fine quality example of an orchestral music box: very rare and rather special. Size: 26 ¾” / 68cm W 10 ¼” / 26cm H 12 ½” / 32cm D
