An original film not seen in 50 years! Computer history: Thomas J. Watson, Jr. looks back on the success of the 1960s decade and looks towards the future of the 1970's. Watson's Kickoff Speech to IBM Employees about the past decade or two, and the iconic machines produced. This rare film is provided for educational and historical purposes and comment. Runs about 10 mins. -- Thomas J. Watson, Jr. was a pivotal figure in the history of IBM and the computing industry. Born in 1914, in Dayton, Ohio, he was the son of IBM's founder, Thomas J. Watson Sr. Watson, Jr. became executive vice president in 1949, and president in 1952 (succeeding his father, who continued as IBM’s chairman). He became CEO in 1956, when his father retired, and five years later he was elected chairman. He led IBM through a period of explosive growth and transformation. Watson Jr. is credited with steering IBM away from its focus on punched-card tabulating machines and into the burgeoning computer era. He made invest heavily in research and development, hiring scores of engineers and pushing the company to develop mainframe computers that would revolutionize data processing. During the 1960's and 1970's, IBM became the dominant force in the computer industry. IBM introduced the SYSTEM/360, a groundbreaking family of large mainframe computers that established industry standards and solidified IBM's position at the forefront of technological innovation. Watson Jr. was also known for his management acumen. He implemented organizational changes that decentralized decision-making and fostered a more dynamic and competitive corporate culture.
