On Monday May 28th 2012, in the packed auditorium of the Michael D. Palm sented Life's Operating Manual. He read aloud from the first chapter a hilarious adventure in Alaska he had with Jim Carrey and a group of deserted hikers; discussed his views on the state of the world; and answered questions on how he believes we can improve the economy, our communities, and our lives. After the event, Pepperdine students passed out free copies of the book to attendees. om Shadyac is the writer and director for Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Nutty Professor, Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty, and I Am. He is a professor of communication at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. In his most recent film, the documentary I Am, winner of the Audience Choice Award and the Student Choice Award at the Telluride MountainFilm Festival in Colorado, Shadyac asks two central questions: What's wrong with the world? and What can we do about it? He reaches out to scientists, religious leaders, enviromentalists, and philosphers to explore human connectedness, happiness, and community. His book, Life's Operating Manual, is a culmination of a lifelong spiritual journey leading to what he calls, "an awakening," after experiencing a near-death biking accident.
