Santorini Greece – A Cruise Day Visit – 2024 In August 2024, one of the ports we visited was Santorini Greece. Pre-cruise online research indicated that Santorini was a large island with a sparse interior and many small to medium villages and outposts primarily dotted along the coastlines. We noted that many of the attractions and villages we wanted to visit were not close to each other and that public transit did not really exist except for perhaps a few bus lines. We did not know the bus stops or schedules and taxis appear to be expensive and not readily accessible from many locations. We knew Santorini did not have on-shore docks or cruise terminals. Ships drop anchor in the harbor and passengers are shuttled ashore by Tenders boats. Our ship carried 4300 passengers so we were concerned about the amount of time it might take to get to shore with that many people in ques. Based on above, we pre-booked a guided tour of Santorini with the cruise line. The tour included pickup near the tender dock. From there, we visited the Mount Elijah, Kamari village, a visit to the city of Oia. The tour bus drove past many sights and the tour guide described many points of interest including the ubiquitous and unique grape vines. and saw any sights throughout the island. We saw much of Santorini island and did not have to worry about how to get around. Out guided tour then stopped at Aeolos Restaurant for a 1 hour demonstration of cooking some Greek food specialties. Than lunch was served. Lunch included tomato fritters, Fava (a split pea spread), grilled beef, roasted tomatoes, bread, olives and condiments along with dessert. Greek wine & Ouzo (an Anise flavored Greek liqueur) were also served. After lunch, we proceeded to Santos Wines, a rustic winery and food stop on the top of a mountainside. We were here for 3 wine tastings. Then we ended the tour at the village/city of Fira which was near our ship tender point. Tour dropped us in crowded parking lot a we trekked up some serious uphill paths to Fira upper town. From there, we were to board the cable car for a descent to the tender area before returning to the ship. The sun and heat at this point was brutal. The town was packed to capacity with tourists to a point where it was hard to walk. Then we found out that we had to wait in a que of 2 hours to get on the cable car for a 3 minute ride to the shuttle boat. Our concluding view of the day was that we were glad we took the tour at 460 Euros for 2 people. We also came away with the opinion that Santorini on this day was at absolute overload capacity with tourists and we almost felt guilty that we were contributing to something that was not good. We have been on many cruises in our day, and this did not feel the same as before. Our cruise ship was like a floating city with 4300 passengers. Ww wonder what people are thinking when they plan ships with 8000 passengers or more? Then we noted that food quality on the ship was seriously down and the atmosphere was nickel & diming passengers. We may not cruise again but rather fly or take trains to European locations from our home in Portugal.
