After being inspired by all the camping videos I've watched, I wanted to give it a try for myself. We would go campground camping every summer, but never anything like this. In this video we wanted to find a campsite we heard about called stony point. I didn't know exactly where it was, but I knew I wanted to try to find it in order to camp there soon. In part 1 we put in at Biscuit city launch. We wanted to take the Pawcatuck river to a large pond called Worden Pond. Somewhere along the banks should be a campsite called Stony Point. We went the wrong direction at the launch and wound up on either the Chicasheen brook or Usquepaug river, it's hard to tell. We had to pull up on the banks by the Amtrak to get around downed trees and pull the kayaks through boggy areas. We paddled about an hour in the wrong direction before we realized our mistake, once we actually looked at the map. We decided to turn back and plan to try again on another day. In part 2 we came back to Biscuit city launch and went the right direction. The river is challenging because of the many obstacles, and it gets narrow as it goes through the Great Swamp, it's not just an open river. After a tough paddle through the swamp, we found the pond. We had to paddle across open water, then follow the contours of the pond to locate the site. Once we found the campsite, we explored a little and found a few more campsites. We cooked lunch, had a beer, and made plans to come back here for an overnighter, now that we knew the campsite actually existed and we knew how to find it. We packed up and headed back. The paddle back would prove challenging. This stretch of the Pawcatuck is through the Great Swamp. A winding, meandering, gooseneck of a river. Several downed trees we had to take out and go over, one where we tipped the kayaks and filled with water. Narrow passages and poison ivy. The GoPro was lost and then found, then died. So not too much footage of our disasters. We made it back to the truck after a few hours. Cold and wet but determined to be back. Back to the drawing board!
