TL;DR: I used several extreme methods to fix my Xbox 360 from the 3-light RRoD, then completely rewired the cooling system with 2 extra fans and a high/low speed switch to keep it cool and happy for years to come, all while looking mostly stock. ~~ Part 1: Causes, Solutions & Upgrades Discussion of causes and common solutions to the RRoD issue, my journey through many solutions until I finally fixed mine, and an overview of my extra upgrades to the cooling system beyond the typical RRoD fixes. ~~ In this series of videos I explain a variety of common upgrades/fixes that can resurrect most original Xbox 360's which have suffered the infamous Red Ring of Death, and then how I future-proofed the cooling system to prevent it from ever happening again. I wired in an extra 50mm fan (controlled in parallel to 2 stock exhaust fans) to blow sideways into the CPU heatsink and a 40mm fan (hardwired to constant +12V) to blow down into the GPU heatsink arm. All fans were routed through a simple 2-pole mechanical switch to all me to let the on-board fan controller drive the 3 larger fans for quieter operation or to manually override these fans with a constant +12V (running them LOUDLY at full speed for maximum cooling). I carved a slot on the top plastic grating (near the HDD mount) for the switch to stick out for easy operation. Total money spent: $15 (50mm fan & mini heatsinks), but I already had Arctic MX-2 thermal pase, all the tools needed, and assorted electronic hardware. Total time spent: 8-10 hours, much of which was just doing the actual wiring and making sure that I could reassemble the outer shell pieces with my mods. Sorry for the autofocus sounds from my DSLR lens. Would have been a headache to film this with manual focus. ~~ Links: The bolts-and-washers method I used to clamp the mother board between the heatsinks and chassis (I used M5x12 fasteners for ALL 8 heatsink connections; I don't know why they say to use long ones for the CPU): http://www.instructables.com/id/Fix-t...
