WHILE I DREAM, The Tokens, (Melba #104) 1956 Flipside: I LOVE MY BABY – This is a very special upload today to honor the late Neil Sedaka. He passed away Friday, February 27, 2026. We acknowledge him for all his musical contributions to the world! He co-wrote and sings lead on “WHILE I DREAM”. This is the only song on which Neil sang lead with The Tokens! Neil Sedaka was born March 13, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York. He is an American pop singer, pianist, composer, songwriter and record producer. During a career which began in 1957, he has sold millions of records as a performer and has written or co-written over 500 songs for himself and others, collaborating mostly with lyricists Howard "Howie" Greenfield and Phil Cody. Neil Sedaka was a founding member of The Tokens along with my very dear friend, Jay Seigel. Jay Seigel’s lifelong friendship with Neil Sedaka began when both attended Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, New York where in 1955, Sedaka formed the singing group The Linc-Tones. A year later Siegel joined The Linc-Tones and the group’s name was changed to The Tokens. Jay Siegel and Neil Sedaka and fellow Tokens group members Cynthia Zolitan and Hank Medress recorded this upload of “WHILE I DREAM” They performed it on their first TV show, The Ted Steele Dance Time. Neil Sedaka’s very first song that he co-wrote in 1958, was "NEVER AGAIN". It was his first solo release. A “FABULOUS” cover version was recorded by Dinah Washington. We have it uploaded on our Pop channel! Neil Sedaka’s bio and music credits are endless and much too much to list for this upload. It would take pages and pages to capture it all. He had 29 songs charted nationally on Billboard which included 3 number one songs. His biggest was “BAD BLOOD” (Rocket #40460) which charted in October 1975 for 14 weeks and reached #1. It stayed #1 for 3 weeks. Neil’s two other #1 songs were “BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO” and “LAUGHTER IN THE RAIN”. Another great song by Neil was “OH CAROL”. It charted nationally on Billboard in December 1959 for 18 weeks and reached # 9. Supposedly, it was written for Neil’s dear friend, another prolific songwriter, Carol King! Neil Sedaka has written and co-written so many songs for many artists. One I must mention that Neil co-wrote is “WHERE THE BOYS ARE” (MGM #12971). It is considered to be Connie Francis’ signature song and was the title song for the 1960 MGM movie “WHERE THE BOYS ARE”. (It was Connie’s acting debut!) Neil Sedaka was represented exclusively by a dear friend of mine, Rob Heller who was a former vice president of entertainment at the “William Morris Agency” (L.A. CA. office). Enjoy this great ballad “WHILE I DREAM” by The Tokens with the late “GREAT” Neil Sedaka singing lead, at age 17! He is truly one of the great singer-songwriters of our time. He will be sadly missed.
