Secrets to Engaging People with Dementia: THREADING, a research-based approach to having an engaging conversation with those living with dementia Contact MaryBeth Watson, Divisional Leader of Hearthstone, at [email protected] to learn more about implementing best-practice engagement into a senior living community or for more information about topics mentioned in this video. The Hearthstone Institute at Abe’s Garden's educational web series shares memory care best practices from the research-based I'm Still Here® approach. These brief videos provide useful tips to anyone working with or caring for someone living with cognitive challenges. The Hearthstone Institute at Abe’s Garden Lead Educator Kristy Mellons provides research-based insights into having engaging conversations with those living with dementia. In this video, we discuss how to have engaging conversations through a technique known as “threading.” This can involve asking for the participant’s opinion, preference, or advice on a variety of topics, or using a photo to aid in sparking a conversation. Kristy shares several examples of this technique and demonstrates a conversation using threading from a photo with Life Engagement Coordinator Ken. The Hearthstone Institute at Abe’s Garden offers a wide range of solutions for the full spectrum of dementia care providers – from day programs and home care to skilled nursing (and everything in between!).
