Lyrics and Melody re-written by Erich Beck This is an old classic folksong that started as a Black American slave song, but was appropriated by poor Whites. I always thought the standard version kind of fell between two chairs - neither representing either the Black or the White situation, so I have re-written both the melody and the lyrics to make two versions which reflect each side. This version has been changed to a minor key and is the 'White version', a prisoner's lament. LYRICS CHORUS : Well it takes a worried man to sing a worried song It takes a worried man to sing a worried song It takes a worried man to sing a worried song I’m worried now, but I won’t be worried long I’m worried now, but I won’t be worried long. I was a runnin’ man, got troubles on my mind I thought that all my runnin’, leave those troubles way behind But trouble follows me like I’m on the Troubles Line Carry my troubles, with me all the time Now I know that I done wrong, but there’s nothin’ I can do Carry chains like troubles until my life is through Now I’m bound for life in shackles, Lord, I wish it wasn’t true And each link is a crime I can’t undo. CHORUS : I asked that judge, what’s gonna be my fine He banged his hammer down, then he looked at me and smiled You’d best be likin’ chains ‘cause you’re a-doin’ time Your whole life, on the hard rock breakin’ line. I dreamt I crossed the river and I laid me down to sleep I dreamt that when I woke, across that river I was free My sins had bin forgotten so I laid me down to sleep But when I woke, still had shackles on my feet. CHORUS : Train it arrived, it was twenty one coaches long There’s nothin’ but troubles, every train that I bin on They say that there’s a train, we’ll ride to freedom on But my troubles, never will be gone Long as I’m a-livin’, never leave me alone. Now my time is runnin’ low and my term is nearly gone They can’t keep me here in chains when my spirit’s moved along My worries bin my life, till they seeped into my bones I’m worried now, but I won’t be worried long When I’ve fin’lly served my time and I broken my last stone And you’re singin’ free and roamin’ free, whatever road you’re on If anyone should ask you who composed this song They can read it on my gravestone, now that I am gone. CHORUS : Well it takes a worried man to sing a worried song It takes a worried man to sing a worried song It takes a worried man to sing a worried song I’m worried now, but I won’t be worried long I’m worried now, dear Lord, but I won’t be worried long I’m worried now, but I won’t be worried long
