Microbial contamination of Cannabis may lead to harmful health effects in humans. Therefore, it is important to establish these limits to ensure consumer safety and foster international trade. Microbial contamination can occur at any stage of Cannabis production. Common contaminants include various species of bacteria and fungi, which may cause health issues such as allergies and life-threatening opportunistic infection in the immunocompromised. To establish microbial limits of detection in Cannabis, it is necessary to use reliable and accurate testing methods that will detect and quantify particular microbes in Cannabis samples. Some of the most commonly used methods for microbial testing of Cannabis include culture, PCR, and next-generation sequencing. Culture-based methods involve growing microorganisms in a medium and counting the number of colonies that grow. This method is relatively simple and inexpensive; however, it is considered more labor intensive and may require more specialized expertise. PCR-based methods involve amplifying microbial DNA using specific primers. This more sensitive and specific method requires specialized equipment, usually making it significantly more expensive. Next-generation sequencing involves sequencing the entire microbial genome in a sample and identifying the microorganisms present. This method is the most sensitive and accurate, but also the most expensive and time-consuming. The use of reliable and accurate testing methods will ensure that Cannabis products meet regulatory standards, helping to promote the growth of the industry and facilitate global commerce.
