ON THE BEACH - BIKINIS and their Curious Inventor

The French Riviera is the perfect setting to talk about bikinis, since the definitive idea arose on one of its beaches. The bikini or biquini, from the name Bikini, an atoll located in the Pacific, is a female swimsuit made up of a bra and tight panties. It was created in 1946 by the French automobile engineer Louis Reard very close to here, so, on these beaches, we are in the country of bikinis. There are many symbols that adorn well-being and advances in all orders that characterize our always remembered and beloved 20th century. Among those many, there is undoubtedly this divided garment that has been synonymous with beauty, exaltation of curves and perennial desires. We are talking about none other than the bikini. Although the bikini is a historically recent creation, garments of similar design were used in previous times, although their use was not intended for bathing, but for sport. Ancient Greek athletes sometimes wore a piece of cloth called a mastodeton, which covered their breasts and was used as late as the High Middle Ages. A good number of mosaics from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD have survived, depicting women in bikinis, the best known being those from the Roman villa of Casale in Sicily. Similar figures have been found in other parts of the island, as well as in Tellaro, in northern Italy. In fact, more recently, in 1913, perhaps influenced by the arrival of women in Olympic swimming, the designer Carl Jantzen created the first two-piece swimsuit, consisting of shorts and a kind of shirt with short sleeves on top. Then, between the 1920s and 1930s and with the development of new materials, especially latex and nylon, manufacturers began to lower the necklines, eliminate the sleeves and adjust the female figure. Despite advances in technology, showing one's navel in public was still considered indecent. In the 1940s, Louis Reard was an automotive engineer who took over his mother's lingerie business and became a clothing designer near Les Folies Bergères in Paris. While on the beaches of nearby Saint Tropez, he noticed women rolling up the edges of their bathing suits to get a better tan, which inspired him to design a swimsuit with an exposed midriff. In May 1946, French designer Jacques Heim produced a two-piece swimsuit he called the "Atome" and advertised it as the "smallest bathing suit in the world." However, the bottom of Heim's swimsuit was large enough to cover above the wearer's navel. Réard then quickly produced his own prototype swimsuit, which was a string bikini consisting of four triangles, two to cover the bust, one for the upper part of the buttocks and one for the pelvic area, made from just 194 cm² of newspaper-printed fabric. When Reard wanted to present it at the swimming pool of the Melitor hotel, he found himself faced with the inconvenience that no professional model dared to wear it in public, and finally had to turn to Micheline Bernardini, a stripper at the Casino de Paris, who warned him that the show scheduled for July 5, 1946, would be a more powerful bomb than the one that the United States Government had detonated five days earlier at Bikini Atoll. That association of words and the true event that took place made Louis Reard's invention forever bear the name by which we all know the two-piece swimsuit, more or less tiny, that adorns the beaches of the whole world and is popularly known as bikini. In Europe, the use of bikinis varies according to the culture, climate and tradition of each country. The countries where bikinis are most used are those with a strong beach culture, warm temperatures and a more open mindset regarding swimwear. #OpenYourWindowToTheWorld #TravelingIsHyperLiving 🌎 Subtitles in Portuguese, Italian, German, French, Russian and English. 🔎 I am Gustavo Llusá, Argentine, after traveling for several years through more than 75 countries I settled in Latvia where I married Dace and learned to know another way of life, on the other side of the map.
