In 2016 Greek new media artist Petros Vrellis demonstrated a fascinating new approach to capture the ungraspable complexity of even a single individual's life, shaped by every single moment that it experiences. Vrellis' video "A new way to knit", which achieved hundred thousands of views in only a week, showcases a method to portray a person by winding a thread around pins on a circular loom. Inspired by his work I took on his idea and expanded the gallery of "knitted" faces. All credits for the method and the general layout of the video go to Petros Vrellis, please have a look at his work! Carrie Fisher was a beloved actress best known for playing the role of Princess Leia in the Star Wars films. After finishing her work in one of her last cinematic performances, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, she passed away on December 27, 2016, at the age of 60. Her untimely death caused deep grief among her fans, friends and family. Any of her coworkers will readily tell you about what a great person Carrie was and nonetheless acknowledge the troubles she faced and went through in her life. As a great Star Wars fan, I wanted to create some form of tribute to our favorite Princess and General on her first anniversary of death and found Petros Vrellis method to be very fitting. The method involves a circular aluminum loom of 26" width on which 216 pins are placed. A single thread is woven between those pins, creating straight black lines that in their entirety gradually form a recognizable portrait. Contrasting with the white background, the tone darkens where the thread intersects with itself. The portrait consists of 3.000 single lines formed by 1.200 meters of thread. The pattern is calculated computationally by an algorithm searching for the best possible solution, to recreate a digital input (e.g. a photograph or painting) with straight black lines. The algorithm then provides the weaving instructions.
