Stuck Bicycle Cleat Bolt: How to remove that stuck cleat

Cleats need to be replaced from time to time whether they be Look cleats or SPD cleats. For cleats, some last longer than others. The brass cleats for Crank Brothers and Time pedals don't have an incredible lifespan, but the hardened steel of Shimano's SPD cleats do. Still – they wear out, and as it's a slow process it tends to go unnoticed until you're pulling out accidentally. Stuck,stripped or rounded off bike clean bolt can present a problem when it's time to replace a work cleat. This can occur with both Look style cleats but also SPD cleats. Clean the bicycle cleat to remove any dirt or debris. If you cannot remove the bolt with a good quality hex key, some bolts, especially Look cleats, allow for the use of a straight edge screw driver. Spray some WD-40 or other penetrating liquid around the bolt. Let sit for 5-10 minutes and repeat the spray. Using a heavy duty straight edge, push down hard on the bolt and turn. I've been able to remove most Look cleats with this method but you do need a good size screw driver and must push down forcibly. If that fails or you can't use a straight edge, try some of the techniques in our video on stuck hex bolt removal shown in the upper left (point). 1. Tap the hex key gently with a rubber mallet. Don't tap to hard or you'll ruin your hex key. 2. Use a Torx key attachment for your ratchet wrench. You may need one size larger then the hex key itself 3. Take the bike shoe to your bicycle mechanic. Other options include drilling though the bolt using a drill the same size as the bolt, to drill through the bolt until the cleat is free, or using a hack saw to cut through the plastic of the cleat to free up the cleat and bolts. Both risk damage to the the bike shoe.
