Living on the island of Newfoundland is remote but not near as remote, as some of the little inhabited islands that surround the big island, Confused yet? There are hundreds of little islands that surround the big Island of Newfoundland, most were settled to be closer to the fishing grounds. Some have since been connected by causeways, when the highway went through and connected many of the isolated communities. Some have been serviced by ferries for decades but as populations in these small isolated, island towns dwindle, the cost to service them rises. Thus resettlement happens, it's when government offers a buyout and communities have to decide, whether to leave or stay. It's not a small decision, and it has to happen for the whole community. There has to be many discussions and a vote has to take place with the residents, and majority wins. Little Bay Islands is one such community that had to have that hard discussion and after many sleepless nights for folks on both sides of the fence, the majority voted to leave. Yet, resettled does not mean abandoned or forgotten. The community has changed without a doubt, and without public services and extremely harsh winters, its more of a summer getaway these days. The community comes alive each summer, with boaters, sightseers and residents returning to relive the glory days. It's bustling with new owners of old houses, now used as cottages. Changing, as technologies enable power without public utilities. Solar, generators, battery banks and even internet by satellite, make isolation seem insignificant during the hot, sunny days. Don't let that fool you though, give it one rainy, stormy, foggy day with high seas and wind enough to strand everyone on shore, and the reality of isolated life comes to mind pretty quickly. Let alone think of the February gales and ice that moves in and surrounds the island, halting all movement to and from the mainland. There's reasons the people voted to leave and the tides of change can't adjust to mother natures wrath. I hope you enjoy this little peak into the changing community, while there is still some heritage left to see. Thanks for joining us, for another day of our everyday off grid journey.
