I went to my second Kwaku Summer Festival 🇬🇭, 23 July 2023 to see my favourite Surinamese-Dutch 🇸🇷🇳🇱 folk singer, Tranga Rugie & their fooiine boy band, The Music Lovers 😍, perform this beautiful song Noti 'F un no dé dya 🥲 at the Nelson Mandela Park, Bijlmer, Amsterdam Zuidoost. The song is a call for people of African descent to recall their ancestry and roots. #abantu ✊🏾 Lobi ❤️ londo, londo, lo-ndo (Londolo) 😩 1. However, the freed people were indentured for a further 10 years, and Keti Koti, “broken chains,” thus officially occurred on July 1, 1873. Kwaku is an annual festival, a gathering of Black people (sic), initially created in 1975 for the community who couldn’t afford to go for summer vacation. It has since become one of the biggest festivals in the Netherlands attracting over 300,000 people. Roze zondag, Pink Sunday, is reputed to be the ”biggest Black gay event in Europe” although much of the black Dutch gay community remains hidden. Pink Sunday is only but a little pink. 🩷 This Kwaku 2023 comes just after the Dutch King Willem-Alexander became the first western monarch to unreservedly apologise for the Trans-Atlantic slavery. “The Bijlmer,” “the Bims,” “the ZO,” or Amsterdam Southeast, which houses the Nelson Mandelapark, is a predominantly Black district that is quite maligned in the Netherlands.
