Recycling 101! How Does Recycling Work? | The Green Cannabis Packaging Series Ep. 3 ♻️

In this episode we will find the answers to three important questions. 1. How Does Recycling Work? 2. What Can Be Recycled? 3. What Can Make Something Non-Recyclable? Mixing materials can greatly affect the recyclability of packaging and should be avoided if possible. However, as long as a percentage of the packaging is recyclable, it will still be accepted by facilities. We will talk more about what that percentage is and what popular packaging in the cannabis industry is currently environmentally problematic. Most people do care about the environment though they may lack awareness regarding the recycling process and materials. This can lead to a few issues during the end of life of packaging. What is the harm in tossing everything in the recycling bin and hoping for the best? Wish Cycling is something we’ve discussed in this series before. This is when someone puts something that is NOT recyclable into their recycling bin believing they are contributing to the recycling process in a positive way. The truth is, this habit of random and excessive recycling impedes the recycling process, slowing down the process SIGNIFICANTLY and creating obstructions. We have to remember, real people are sorting this material BY HAND. We could really be making the recycling process more inefficient if we aren’t familiar with what materials are acceptable at our local recycling facilities. It is not as simple as just throwing any material into your recycling bin and leaving it up to the recycling facilities to sort it out. We need to be informed about what the acceptable materials and try to make sure we are being helpful as consumers. WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED? We will be focusing on Plastic, Fiber, Glass and Metal. Example of Fibers: Carton Board Corrugated Board Plastic is an essential component of many items, including water bottles, combs, and beverage containers. Knowing the difference, as well as the SPI codes, will help you make more informed decisions about your recycling. The seven types of plastic are organized by SPI code: (Society of the Plastics Industry) 1. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET) 2. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) 3. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) 4. Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) 5. Polypropylene (PP) 6. Polystyrene or Styrofoam (PS) 7. Miscellaneous plastics (includes: polycarbonate, polylactide, acrylic, acrylonitrile butadiene, styrene, fiberglass, and nylon)Crushed Grounded Flaked Metals: Metals are a great option for packaging and are typically very recyclable. Aluminum (infinitely recyclable.) Tin, Steel (good but not infinitely recyclable.) Glass: Glass is another fantastic eco-friendly packaging option as it too is infinitely recyclable. Recycled glass is easier to process than virgin glass which has never been through the recycling system. Cork is complicated. In the United States you will want to check with your local recycling facility to find out if they do accept the material. There are also programs where you can ship your cork in to be recycled if you are in areas where your facility does not accept it. This is understandably not something most people will do 100% of the time, but there are other options. Cork is compostable as well or can be sliced up and used in potted plants to help the vegetation hold onto more moisture. When you mix materials together you are reducing the recyclability of the product. In the case of the extremely popular Barrier Bag, the mixing of materials make it completely non-recyclable.
