Outstanding Young Alumnus: Ryan Walters

This year’s Outstanding Young Alumnus is Ryan Walters (‘10). After graduating, Walters taught history at McAlester High School in his hometown for eight years. In 2016 he was selected as an Oklahoma Teacher of the Year Finalist, which led to his role as the Oklahoma Secretary of Education and Executive Director of Every Kid Counts Oklahoma. Fascinated with history from an early age, Walters loves learning about stories and the people that make them. “The better I understand human nature, the better I understand life and how to make decisions, the better I understand God because we are all made in his image.” At Harding, Walters was nurtured by faculty mentors in the department of history and political science as well as in the College of Education. He has since become a mentor for so many others, making a difference in the lives of students, fellow educators and communities in his home state of Oklahoma.
