Hey folks. John Leppler here, personal injury lawyer right here in the Baltimore area. And today I want to talk about a practice area that my law firm represents injured victims in which are motor vehicle accidents involving a Lyft rideshare driver. Everybody know what a Lyft is? L-Y-F-T. It's another taxi service like Uber that's kind of taken over yellow taxi and other yellow cab services nowadays. How do you get a Lyft driver? How do you get a Lyft taxi service? Well, you go onto your phone, you go onto the app and you simply request a Lyft driver to pick you up, take you to your destination, and you pay Lyft for the services. But what happens if you get into a motor vehicle accident or a pedestrian accident with a Lyft rideshare driver? Lyft, similar to Uber, is difficult to navigate regarding the amount of insurance coverage that's available, if you do in fact get into an accident involving a Lyft rideshare driver. Let's say for example, first that you're a passenger, you're a Lyft rideshare passenger, en route to your destination. Lyft's insurance policy will cover you for medical treatment for up to $2,500 in personal injury protection. Let's say now that you're a Lyft passenger going en route to your destination and your Lyft rideshare driver causes a motor vehicle accident and you suffer severe injuries from it. Lyft's insurance policy in that scenario will cover up to $1,000,000 in bodily injury liability coverage for you under Lyft's insurance policy. Let's say for example, that your en route as a Lyft rideshare passenger to your destination; and somebody else, a third party causes an accident involving you and the Lyft rideshare driver and you as the passenger suffer injuries. Lyft's insurance policy will also cover a certain amount of uninsured motorist coverage for you in case you need it. Now let's change gears here. Let's say you're driving a motor vehicle or you're a pedestrian walking a crosswalk, and you get hit by a Lyft rideshare driver. If that Lyft rideshare driver is either going to pick up the Lyft passenger or has a Lyft passenger in the car, you will be covered up to $1,000,000 for bodily injury liability through Lyft's insurance coverage. Also, changing gears here again. If the Lyft driver does not have the app on, is not going to pick up a Lyft passenger, then you're only covered up to Lyft's insurance coverage of up to $50,000 in bodily injury liability coverage. Obviously there's a huge difference between $50,000 and $1,000,000. And depending on the severity of your injuries, $50,000 may certainly not be appropriate, and not be enough to compensate you for your injuries. Lyft's Insurance Company will fight you tooth and nail regarding a personal injury claim under their policy.
