When Isaac Bashevis Singer won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1978, many people said that Yiddish, the language in which he wrote, was dying. They wondered why such a talented writer would create in a language that was not in daily use. Singer explained that “for 2000 years Hebrew was considered a dead language. Suddenly it became strangely alive. What happened to Hebrew may also happen to Yiddish one day.” The stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer are very much alive in PJ Library books like The Wise Men of Chelm and the Foolish Carp, The Parakeet Named Dreidel, and Just Stay Put.
