Picked up a pair of Benny Greb signature stick to try out. They create a very different sound on cymbals, so I put a quick comparison together with some other sticks I had lying about. Nylon tips (maple stick) bring out the most 'ping,' of course. Same stick with a wood tip brings out more 'clang.' The BG stick by Vic Firth is hickory, and the different wood and tip shape really bring out more of the low tones of the cymbal. The stick is said to be sized as a 5B, but to me it feels not much different than a 5A in the hand. It does lend itself to louder playing, though. Cymbal is a Zildjian 20" Symphonic Viennese that serves as a ride cymbal, as I really dig its bright, articulate sound. Recording was done with a single Shure SM57 microphone.
