While the walk up is quite steep, it’s worth it — the landscape slowly opens, revealing wide views across the Pyrenees and the surrounding valleys. We also visited caves believed to have been used by the Cathars, quiet and enclosed spaces set directly into the landscape. There’s a sense of shelter and stillness there, a natural retreat from the outer world. Rennes-le-Château is a small hilltop village also known for stories and theories surrounding its 19th-century priest, Bérenger Saunière, whose sudden wealth and church renovations gave rise to long-standing legends of hidden treasure and mystery.
