Janis and I are on our 3rd leg flying to the Bahamas from Cross City, FL to Fort Pierce, FL where we will stay the night and get a fresh start in the morning to the BAHAMAS!!!!. We had some turbulence which caused one of our GoPros to come loose and disconnect the audio cable, we were also in/out of IMC during this leg. What we learned was that if the cable is disconnected when the GoPro is running, simply reconnecting doesn't reestablish audio, it has to be turned off, then back on again (re-booted). So we didn't capture all of the re-route audio! Initially, we were cleared direct to KFPR which was great, then the re-routes began, ATC was very accommodating AND patient to give us the re-routes in stages, as we didn't initially understand the name of the 1st way-point. It didn't matter that; CERMO was initially spelled out as; CEMRO, then correctly as; CERMO as I got fixated on what I thought I heard; THERMO and should have ONLY concentrated on the spelling-lesson learned!. That way we could at least get the plane pointed in the right direction. We did get better and faster with each re-route, plus they got easier as we passed previous way-points. Great learning experience flying in unfamiliar/busy airspace. So BIG shout-out to the female controller at Jacksonville Approach (118.6) who when we finally got it all sorted out and I said: "Thanks for your patience" Her response: "We're in this together" UPDATE: On our way back to Wichita, a Southwest pilot had similar trouble with one of our "more" familiar way-points, Janis and I got a chuckle out of it and remarked that we didn't feel so bad as even the "Big-Boys" get confused sometimes as well... Lessons Learned: Don't get too excited in unfamiliar/busy airspace ATC is there to help! If you don't understand what's being said, ATC will break-it-down for you. Also switch ForeFlight to Low-IFR charts, it helps declutter the screen and makes identifying the way-points easier! On our return trip we initially thought about flying VFR w/FF to make it easier. But we decided against it, so we could get another opportunity to learn/improve. So we reviewed the Low-IFR charts anticipating "possible re-routes", we were ready! We ended up getting Radar Vectors all the way back to Cross City - HA! ROUTE: KCTY-KFPR then: KCTY-CERMO-V537-TRV-KFPR then: KCTY-TEMPE-BAIRN-SMERE-TRV-KFPR then: KCTY-BARIN-KFPR
