The Role of the IMO in Implementing the BBNJ Agreement

The United Nations Foundation, in partnership with Seascape Consultants Ltd, hosted a virtual gathering on May 29, 2025, to discuss how the International Maritime Organization (IMO) can leverage existing tools and measures to support the effective implementation of the BBNJ Agreement (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction), officially titled the “Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction.” The session featured presentations from the IMO, national representatives, leading experts, and thought leaders working at the nexus of biodiversity and shipping. A participatory Q&A session followed, providing an opportunity for attendees to engage directly with speakers and contribute to the dialogue.
