6 Steps to Communicate with Impact: Insights from Patrick Donadio

In a two-part, in-depth interview, Skip Prichard talks with speaker, writer, and business strategist Patrick Donadio about the importance of communications training for leaders. Skip notes that Patrick spent years teaching and creating executive seminars before pulling that experience into his book, “Communicating with IMPACT.” The result is 33 years of expertise condensed into some practical guidelines. Skip and Patrick spent the first part of the interview discussing the IMPACT process outlined in the book: IMPACT = Intention + Message + Person + Activate + Clarify + Transform. Patrick emphasizes that you need to take elements of your business and think of them as a “franchise” would; that is, analyze communications components and make them a process, rather than a series of one-off activities. “What’s the hardest things about creating impact?” Skip asks. “People are impatient and busy and forget about ‘intention,’” says Patrick. People also tend to forget how to listen. And for leaders, listening skills training is a must. One technique he suggests to “stay present” in a conversation: do an “internal summary” and talk to yourself, repeating points silently to really focus on what’s being said.
