How has Abiy Ahmed silenced Oromia? Can Ethiopians unite around common causes? -- Soretti Kadir

How did Abiy Ahmed manage to silence all forms of opposition in Oromia, and Ethiopia in general? Since coming to power in 2018 Abiy has subdued Oromia and got away with things that seemed impossible in 2018 in the light of the Oromo protests. The regime has assassinated the popular Oromo singer Hachalu Hundessa, jailed the firebrand activist Jawar for months, and murdered other prominent politicians. All without anything so much as a protest. Is the regime allowed to perpetrate terrible things because it is accepted as an “Oromo government” or are there more fundamental reasons? Zooming out of Oromia, are Ethiopians capable of transcending the ethnic loyalties that have blinded them to bigger common problems and making a common cause? Might giving class analysis and class struggle more weight be the answer? We discuss these fundamental questions with the political activist Soretti Kadir.
