This study was made by looking at a reproduction in the 1998 Sargent exhibition catalog by Elaine Kilmurray and Richard Ormond published by Princeton University Press. I used Canson oil paper, nylon and bristle brushes, linseed oil, titanium white, yellow ochre, raw umber, quinacridone magenta, alizarin crimson, ivory black, ultramarine blue, cadmium red light, burnt sienna. The painting took about two hours and was done wet into wet. The catalog entry says: “Sargent had met Judith Gautrier around 1883, at the time he was beginning the portrait of Madame Gautreau and he became obsessed with her as a model. The daughter of the novelist Théophile Gautier, the intimate friend of the composer Richard Wagner and a leading light in French literary society, Judith Gautrier was noted for her advanced opinions and freedom from convention. She wore loose oriental-style gowns, cultivated an exotic appearance, and lived surrounded by beautiful and aesthetic things.” Thanks for watching:)
