In March 2026, Nigeria made its first state visit to Britain in thirty-seven years. At the white-tie banquet in St George's Hall at Windsor Castle, four royal women appeared in tiaras and jewels that carried far more meaning than any speech delivered that evening. Queen Camilla wore a tiara with one of the most scandalous origin stories in European royalty — diamonds and sapphires that once belonged to a Belgian princess who was confined to an asylum, publicly divorced, and forced to sell her jewels to pay her debts. Catherine, Princess of Wales, chose the tiara most associated with Princess Diana, paired it with the Queen Mother's sapphire fringe earrings, and dressed in emerald green to honour the Nigerian flag. Princess Anne bypassed her usual tiara in favour of a Greek diamond diadem that survived her grandmother's exile, institutionalisation, and two world wars. And Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester, wore a tiara gifted to Queen Mary by the Guinness brewing dynasty in 1893 — a piece most royal watchers have never heard of. In this episode of Behind the Gift, we examine every jewel worn that evening: where it came from, who owned it before, and why it was chosen for this particular night. From Cartier Art Deco bracelets that can transform into a bandeau tiara, to a pair of earrings given to a teenage Princess Anne by her parents, to a diamond serpent necklace Camilla inherited from her grandmother — every piece tells a story the Palace never explains out loud. This was also the first time since 1928 that a British monarch hosted a Muslim head of state during Ramadan — and the evening was adapted accordingly, with a dedicated prayer space, a bespoke non-alcoholic cocktail inspired by the Nigerian drink zobo, and a sunset fast-breaking before the banquet began.
