Full Poem Text: At the Colorado State Psychiatric Hospital No one around here knows the difference between a return of reason and a certain cunning. I’m playing dead, floating with my head down. My hair dangles like kelp sucked toward the drain. All day I follow the anvil clouds, the great sky capacitors throwing hot wire into the sea. Later, a guard shouts: Everybody out of the water. Now dripping on the sand, such easy humility, these things, waiting it out, the decisions made for you, following the whistles: Circle up, confess, turn in sharp items. I watch the endless buildup, every day a puddle, a great lake escapes and rises so high above me.
