Itinerant puppeteer Walter Wilkinson roams the rural West Country on foot in 1925, with his wheelbarrow theatre, putting on puppet shows for the locals and camping in farmers' fields. Loving 6-part Channel 4 dramatisation of The Peep Show (1927), the first of Wilkinson's series of rambling memoirs from the 1920s and 30s, recounting his travels through different parts of the UK (as well as an episode in America later in the book series!). A wry and perspicacious yet open-hearted utopian, socialist, vegetarian, and opponent to urbanization, systematization, capitalism, and consumer culture, Wilkinson is a bit of a forgotten figure today, but his books are well-written, relaxing, and insightful - a unique kind of armchair travel literature, which might appeal to fans of other big walkers such as Robert Macpharlane today. These otherwise impossible to see episodes were provided from digitized VHS recordings from the 1980s by Ellen Cheshire, daughter of the show's research consultant, theatre historian David Cheshire. For Research and Education Purposes.
