NOTE ONE : Addition of what is not part of solāt to solāt A. If a person intentionally performed an action in solāt or say something which is not stated in the sharī'a, the solāt is null and void. The prophet (salla-Llahu alaehi wa sallam) said in the hadith of Āisha (radiyaLLahu an'humā) “whoever introduced into this matter of ours, what is not part of it, will have it rejected” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim). For example, a man folding his hands at the back while praying, or placing them on his heads, or closing his eyes, or raising his eyes (looking at the sky) or interlocking and pressing the fingers etc. B. If he did that intentionally, insisting it must be done that way, after he had been made to understand the requirements of sharī'a in solāt, then he is walking the way of apostasy. C. If he did that forgetfully (or ignorantly), then it will affect the reward of the solāt. The mother of the believers, Āisha (radiyaLLahu an'hā) said; “I asked Allah's Messenger (salla-Llahu alaehi wa sallam) about looking around during prayer and he said, “It is something which the devil snatches from a person's prayer.” (Al-Bukhari) NOTE TWO : Addition of a ruk'nu to solāt When a person prayed more ruk'nu (pillar) such as standing, ruku'u or sujūd more than the required number, A. If it is done intentionally, then the solāt is null and void. B. If it is done forgetfully but remembered while still on it, it is compulsory on him to stop it and then perform two sujūd AFTER the taslīm (and then taslīm again). The solāt is correct. C. If it is done forgetfully and did not remember until after it is done, then he should continue his solāt and make two sujūd AFTER the taslīm (and then taslīm again). The solāt is correct. For example; a man performing solātuz-zuh'r prayed five rak'ah, and didn't know until he reached the last tasha'hud, he will complete the tasha'hud, make taslīm and do two sujūd afterwards, then do taslīm (again) If he remembers while on the fifth rak'ah, he will have to stop it, sit down, read the tasha'hud, make taslīm, then two sujūd and then taslīm (again), the solāt is correct. However, if he remembers after the whole of the solāt, he will go back facing the qiblah, make two sujūd, then taslīm, the solāt is valid. The evidence of that is the hadith of Abdullāh bn Mas'ūd (radiyaLLahu an'hu) that the prophet (salla-Llahu alaehi wa sallam) prayed five rak'ah for zuh'r and it was said to him, has the solāt been increased (in content)? Then he (salla-Llahu alaehi wa sallam) said; “and what is that?” They said “you prayed five (rak'ahs)”. Then he faced the qiblah and made two sujūd, then taslīm. (Al-Bukhari, Muslim and the Sunan) NOTE THREE : Making a taslīm before the completion of solāt is an addition to the activities in solāt. This is because, when the remainder of the solāt is later observed (when remembered), then there will be two taslīms made in that (single) solāt. When one is observing solāt and he made taslīm before the completion of the solāt, the followings are applicable; A. If it is done intentionally, then the solāt is invalid. B. If it is done forgetfully, and the person did not remember until after a long period of time, he will repeat the whole of the solāt. C. If he remembered after a short period of time (say some minutes later), he will observe the rest of the solāt and make two sujūd after the taslīm, then make taslīm. The solāt is valid. For example, a man observing solātuz-zuh'r made taslīm after the third rak'ah. If he did that intentionally, then the solāt is invalid. If it occurred forgetfully, but he remembered after a short period of time, then he will observe the remaining (one) rak'ah, make taslīm, then make sujūd sah'w (the two sujūd) and then taslīm again. The evidence of that is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (radiyaLLahu an'hu) that the prophet (salla-Llahu alaehi wa sallam) prayed one of the two (Zuh'r or Asr) and made taslīm after the (first) two rak'ah. He then got up and went towards a piece of wood at the front of the mosque and placed his hands upon it. And Abubakr and Umar were among the people, but they were afraid to speak to him. Then the hasty type among the people came out and said; “the solāt is shortened”. And a man whom the prophet (salla-Llahu alaehi wa sallam) called Dhul-Yadaen said (to the prophet); have you forgotten, oh Allah's messenger, or has the solāt been shortened?” he (salla-Llahu alaehi wa sallam) said; “I have neither forgotten nor has it been shortened”. He said; “indeed you have forgotten”. He (the prophet salla-Llahu alaehi wa sallam) then prayed the remaining two rak'ah, then said the taslīm. He then uttered the takbīr and performed a sujūd (of sah'w) like that of his ordinary sujūd or a bit longer and then raised his head and said takbīr and then put his head down and performed a sujūd like that of his ordinary sujūd or a bit longer, and then raised his head and said takbīr. (Al-Bukhari, Muslim and the Sunan)
