Scotland rarely features in the usual early music repertoire, but Giorgio Mainerio was thought to have been the son of a Scotsman (he signed his own name as Mayner). However he himself was born in Parma, and served for most of his life as a priest in Udine. Although he wrote much sacred music - understandable for a priest - he is best known for the collection of popular songs and dances, 'Il Primo Libro de Balli', from which this piece is taken. Published in Venice in 1578, it consists of 21 short pieces in the styles typical of the time. One feature of this collection is that many of the pieces are presented twice - once in double time (i.e. 2/2 or 4/4) and then again in triple time (i.e. 3/4). This change from double to triple can be heard in 'Caro Ortolano'.
