Staged Excision for Removal of Birthmarks Some birthmarks are not ideal for laser removal, leaving surgery as the only option. In order to minimize the length of the surgical scar and allow for stretching/expansion of the skin over time (eliminating the need for tissue expanders), we employ a technique called a staged excision. With this technique, a birthmark is gradually reduced in size over a period of 1-2 years. This picture shows the first stage of our surgical excision of this congenital melanocytic nevus. You can see the birthmark has been reduced to almost two-thirds its original size, and we have maintained the scar within the boundaries of the nevus. This birthmark will take 2-3 stages (spaced 6 months to 1 year apart) to completely remove.
