On December 16th, 1944, German troops broke through the American defensive positions in the Ardennes Forest. In just two days, complete divisions found themselves either encircled or scattered. The toll would climb to nearly 90,000 American soldiers killed, wounded, or captured. This became the most extensive and devastating engagement the U.S. Army experienced during World War II. However, three weeks prior to this disaster, an American general had positioned himself at the Rhine River. Across the water, German defensive bunkers sat completely abandoned. The route into the German heartland lay completely vulnerable. He pleaded with Eisenhower for authorization to advance. The answer he received was negative. His identity was Jacob Devers. And that directive which halted him potentially set the stage for the Battle of the Bulge to occur. Jacob Devers existed outside the established circle. He hadn't climbed the ranks alongside Eisenhower and Bradley through West Point social networks. 💬 If you have stories about World War II or your ancestors shared them with you, share them below. 🔔 Follow to see more real moments where respect is shown through actions, not words. #ww2 #worldwar2 #worldwar #ww2history #ww2sercets #ww2facts #ww2history #worldwar2history
