The evening unfolded as both a celebration and a masterclass. Lee, charismatic and unscripted, introduced the film as a "reinterpretation" of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low — not a remake, but a reimagining infused with the rhythms of New York, the moral complexity of Black fatherhood, and the sharp improvisational edge of seasoned collaborators. Actors spoke candidly about working alongside Washington, navigating his formidable presence on set, and the freedom Lee gave them to improvise and elevate the script. Hadera reflected on the emotional depth of playing a character grounded in strength and quiet resilience, while Thompson recalled his full-circle moment — from seeing She’s Gotta Have It as a young man to now starring in a Spike Lee joint.
