Christine Rice sings Irene's air, "New Scenes of Joy" from Handel's oratorio 'Theodora', accompanied by Jonathon Swinard (Head of Music, Garsington Opera). // 61. Air - Irene New scenes of joy come crowding on While sorrow fleets away, Like mists before the rising sun That gives a glorious day. // Handel wrote the oratorio in 1749, when he was 64, and it was a Box Office failure owing to its story of persecution and martyrdom being too far removed from his usual Old Testament settings, and that an earthquake had hit London the week before its premiere. Lord Shaftesbury proclaimed it "as finished, beautiful and labour'd [well worked-out] a composition as ever Handel made. To my knowledge, this took him up a great while in composing. The Town don't like it at all, but ... several excellent musicians think as I do." Handel himself ranked the final chorus of Act II, "He saw the lovely youth," "far beyond" "Hallelujah" in Messiah.
