In January 1948 the UN Security Council established the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) to monitor and report on the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. At the Security Council’s recommendation, UN military observers arrived in the region in 1949 to supervise the ceasefire line established by the Karachi agreement. In March 1951, following the termination of UNCIP, the Security Council decided that the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) should continue to supervise the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir. The United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in New Delhi documented the 1949 arrival of UN military observers, UN operations, and scenes of daily life in Jammu and Kashmir. Captured on 16mm Kodachrome, the legendary film stock renowned for its depth of colour, clarity, and stability, this documentation provides an unusually vibrant glimpse into history. Utilizing materials from the UN Audiovisual Library, this production highlights selections from the UNIC documentation. https://media.un.org/avlibrary/en
