Water Safety NZ Chief Executive Glen Scanlon announces the release of our 2025 Drowning Prevention Report. The report examines drowning deaths across Aotearoa in 2025 and the circumstances behind them. There were 78 drownings in 2025, four more than last year, but eight fewer than the 10-year average. Progress is being made, but there is still significant work to do. A defining theme in this year’s report is the risk of being alone in or around water. In 2025, 43 people- 55% of all fatalities - were by themselves. Over the past decade, 408 people have drowned while alone, 310 of them male. “Each of the 78 people lost in 2025 are our family, friends and loved ones. We believe one death is too many,” says Glen Scanlon. This report arrives at a critical time, as ACC funding to Water Safety New Zealand concludes creating real risk for future drowning prevention efforts.
